Students, faculty, alumni and special guests, the U.S. Army War College's ISCNE team gathered in Patterson Hall Friday afternoon to begin this year's negotiation simulation.

The exercise actually begins a few days ahead of the kickoff as teams are assembled, mentors recruited, and packets of background material are distributed. Students quickly must come to understand the region and the issues that the region faces as they prepare their strategies for tackling real-world international issues.

The 2024 simulation focuses on the challenges faced by the Central Asian nations, and includes delegations from Russia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrghzstan. Students spent the evening meeting and discussing potential paths forward on border security and international water management among other issues. They would meet again early the next morning with fresh ideas, energy and a frantic effort to write Memorandums of Understanding that would give each delegation a sense of future commitment.

The exercise is one of two that happen each year, that most alumni will call one of the most realistic and formative learning experiences of the program.
