Jocelyn Bell is a 2016 graduate from the Patterson School with a focus on Development. During her time at Patterson, Jocelyn interned for a Mumbai-based anti-trafficking program that helped digitize blocks of women in the red-light district. Prior to Patterson, she received her bachelor's from Brown University with a major in Development Studies. Upon graduating from Patterson, Jocelyn started a Ph.D. program at Brown University in 2017. She is currently in her first phase of her Ph.D. dissertation where she spent two months in Delhi and is now residing in Mumbai. Her research in Mumbai is centered around how anti-sex work networks communicate to perform policy outreach. Jocelyn's Ph.D. dissertation is focused on the intersection of social movement, political sociology, global and transnational sociology, nonprofit organizations, and the sociology of love. Outside of her studies, Jocelyn enjoys servicing on the Elder Board for her church, overseeing the spiritual health of the church and community. When asked about what her ideal job would look like post-Ph.D., she said: "The ideal job would be a combination of many jobs. One that allows me to teach, mentor, conduct research domestically and internationally. I also would like to do consulting where I can create bridges between NGOs, social movements, the political arena, and the academy, and make those bridges accessible to youth."
