Dr Yujia He is an assistant professor at the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce, University of Kentucky. Previously she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology jointly affiliated with the Institute for Emerging Market Studies (IEMS) and the Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study. She also worked in Washington D.C. as a visiting fellow for the Atlantic Council’s Scrowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, and as a researcher for the Wilson Center’s Science and Technology Innovation Program. She is interested in international political economy, science and technology policy, and governance issues in the Asia Pacific region. 

Her research has been published in numerous journal articles and think tank reports, focusing on Chinese overseas investment, artificial intelligence policy, data governance, rare earths trade and governance, and citizen science (Google Scholar). Her current projects study the smart city and broadly ICT-enabled sustainable development, Chinese high-tech firms’ global expansion, the governance of emerging technologies (with focus on AI and FinTech), and the role of rising powers in global economic governance. She has conducted fieldwork research in China, the United States, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. Her work has received funding from HKUST IEMS, the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy, the University of Chicago Center in Beijing, the George Washington University Center for International Business Education and Research, and the Sam Nunn Security Program. She has also provided media articles or comments for the United Nations University, the Financial Times, KrASIA, ISPI (Italy), OZY, SciStarter. 

At the Patterson School Dr. He teaches courses including International Science and Technology Policy, Economic Statecraft, and Research Methods in International Relations. She obtained her PhD in International Affairs, Science and Technology (IAST) and MS in International Affairs from Georgia Tech, and BS in Chemistry from Peking University and Stanford China Program certificate.
